What is an Application Server?

An Application Server, referred to in our client-server solution, is software installed onto the server that delivers applications, such as Microsoft Word, to client computers. An Application Server operates between the server and client computers to publish applications to the clients. The user sees the application icons on their desktop just as if the application was installed onto their local machine. This technology is common on client-server networks.

If a client-server network does not employ an Application Server users are required to log onto the server from their workstation, using Windows remote access technology, and start the application from the server's Windows menu system. This is a cumbersome process and not user friendly.

We recommend the 2X Application Server. The product offers enterprise solutions at a small office price - significantly cheaper than higher end products, such as Citrix, that cost many thousands of dollars. Additionally, the 2X solution is free to use if no more than 5 concurrent connections are required. We use it ourselves!
